Summary: A sample of 700 elemtary pupils in Zagreb was analyzed by
the instruments measuring intrinsic motivational aspects. The influence of
motivational and cognitive factors on school grades and selfesteem was
measured while controlling intelligence. The results show that extrinsic
motivation is dominant. Especially important result of teh analysis is the
conclusion that the most significant determinants of succcess in school are
in the cognitive and not in teh motivational factors.
Research goals: The main is to assess the dominant motivational
mechanisms in our elementary schools; to test the relations between these
motivational mechanisms and achievement criteria. The results will point
