Summary: As many other industrial societies, the Republic of
Croatia is recently facing the problem of the growth of the aged population
what has influence on all aspects of society, from the
marketing of products, to retirement and employment patterns and to social
relationships between generations. The first objective of our study was to
provide data on demographic changes in the
structure of the Croatian elderly population, with special emphasis on
population of retirees. The second objective was to examine the
expectations about retirement and to identify various factors which could
be important in retirement planning and preparation for withdrawal from
work. In the period 1953-1991 demographic structure of the Croatian
population is marked by a trend of increase in the number of old people. It
is projected that by the year 2000, about 13.5 per cent of population of
Croatia will be 65 and over. However, the participation of the elderly in
the labour force decreased which, together with increased unemployment,
causes an unfavorable retirees/labour force ratio. The study on
expectations about retirement showed that the women had more positive
attitudes toward retirement than men. About 30 per cent of our sample
expressed willingness to continue working after retirement. Higher
proportion of work continuers were men and with higher level of education.
Together with this, the previous research on the effects of
shiftwork on the health, work ability and social life of workers was
continued. The results showed that, irrespective of age and gender, workers
in 12-hour shift systems reported less disturbed domestic, non-domestic and
social life than workers in 8-hour shift system.
The project is a part of the COST A5 project "Ageing and Technology"
since 1992. The results obtained were presented at 7 international
conferences; 13 scientific papers and 10
conference abstracts were published in the period 1991-1995.
Research goals: Growth of the aged population is a feature
common to majority of industrial societies as a result of a long term
decline in the fertility rate together with increased life expectancy. The
ageing of a nation has influence on all aspects of society, from the
marketing of products, to retirement and employment patterns and to social
relationships between generations. The first objective of our study
was to provide data on demographic changes in the structure of the
Croatian elderly population, characteristics of the retirees and
participation of the elderly in a labour force. The statistical
highlighting of the growth of ageing population is important in order to
predict future trends. It is necessary to develop new concepts on the
health, work ability and well-being of aged population and to take actions
in order to diminish a bias between changed demographic structure and
present demands of life in our society. The particularly important
segment of the aged population are retirees. There are number of studies
showing that anticipation of the problems likely to occur in the age of
retirement and appropriate planning of that period of life have a positive
influence on the adjustment to new conditions. Therefore, the second
objective of our study was to examine the expectations about retirement in
our population and to identify various factors which could be important in
retirement planning and preparation for withdrawal from work.
Together with this, the previous research on the effects of shiftwork on
the health, work ability and social life of workers was continued. Aimed
at identifying the factors which are related to (in)tolerance to shiftwork,
the results of this study could help to alleviate some of the
shiftworkers' problems by choosing the appropriate shift system or by
selecting the individuals who are predisposed to tolerate shiftwork
reasonably well.
