Summary: Croatia is an explicitly emigrant country. Because of this
status there are many scientific and scolarly questions to be answered in
this field that have been systematically ignored because of the former
political regime which brandede the topic taboo. Special attention at this
moment is focused on the present Croatian immigrant movement in helping
Croatia materialy and politically in the war of liberation. The basis of
this movement, its magnitude and the possibility of its application in the
development of Croatia in the post war period still have to be analysed
and evaluated. This problem will be dealt with in an interdisciplinary way
with the aim of making the results concretely applicable for the future.
Research goals: The aim of this project is to answer the many
research questions, which because of the former political climate in
Croatia were not allowed to be even asked. Emigration in fact was in many
of its aspects a taboo topic. Therefore it is necessary to: establish an
approximate number of emigrant Croats; register and collect, as many as
possible, documents and other materials (emigrant newsprint, publications,
documents about emigrant associations and organisations, etc.). On the
basis of these details the present situation in the emigrant communities
will be reconstructed and analyzed; cooperation will be established with
scolarly institutions that deal with immigration in the countries where
Croatian emigrants exist; a directory will be produced of Croatian
associations, organisations, clubs, parishes and prominent individuals;
research will be done on the history of the post-war nationally aware Croat
emigrants; an assessment of the state of affairs in the most populated
Croatian ethnic communities in the United States, Canada, South America and
Australia; and research the possibility of economic, scolarly/scientific,
and cultural cooperetion with prominent individuals in the emigre
communities with corresponding individuals and institutions in the
homeland. The result of this research will be able to be applied in a
series of projects for the rebuilding and post-war development of the
Republic of Croatia.
