Summary: Investigated are the suitable expert system parameters for "intelligent" computer regulated structures. By private means the Ward's NeuroShell and GURU ES, was obtained and from research found the Neurowindow in 1991. In 1993 the BRAINMAKER NN shell was obtained by joint financial efforts of th FCI. With financial help from the FCI the professional version of the M-Strudl was obtained in 1992. By the CRO Ministry of Research grant we have obtained the (1992) university research version of COSMOS-M FE system. The KAPPA ES was investigated too. We have developed structural models of simple structure prototypes in which we were able to regulate the internal forces and deflections, caused by moving rolling loads. This could be done via the inserted subroutines by keyboard, observing on the screen the moving load position, pattern, velocity, deflection of the structure. This simulation program was initially tested by using STRUDL. The in build manual control could be transferred to an "intelligent" system by implementation of NN which are trained using large number of generated examples. After training the program's switches are switched to NN control. We were able to show that it is possible to implement a NN ES control to the traditional possibilities of structural behavior control. In this way large sums of energy could be saved. This effort was published in the structural journals, home and abroad. The TC and the WG VI of IABSE have placed the development of such systems as one of the priorities in the worldwide investigation of new, advanced, future structural systems.

Keywords: Expert system, Neural network, sensors, atenuator control, artificial intelligence, adaptive control, bridge, moving load, IABSE

Research goals: The objective of the project is the simulation of a structure regulated by expert system and neural network (a hierarchy of NN). The structure should automaticaly bahave as a living system: on the basis of sensorial information it should resist the forces acting on it. In the first part all of the relevant informations should be searched. Then an extensive project behavior of computer models, suitable for such a purpose, should be investigated. The suitabilities of various ES and NN shells should be studied too. The simulation model behaviour programs should be tested and compared with already tested professional FE programs. Some connections with other universities and groups dealing with similar programs should be established: the link to IABSE (the Intern. Ass. for Bridge and Structural Engineers), as well as the link to TEMPUS project JEP 3008 ICADRES (Integrated CAD of Earthquake Resistant Building and Civil Engineering Structures), and the ETF at Zagreb and Split. The knowledge about such system behaviors should be incorporated in postgraduate studies of structural design at the GF Zagreb. The following advanced engineering activities and technologies should benefit: -Theory and application of integrated CAD of structures, -Mathematical modelling of dynamic behaviour of investigated structures, -Application of RB expert systems and NN in engineering structures, -Product modelling of structures and design process, including relevant standards and codes, -Implementation of knowledge representation into various model engineering structures, -energy savings, -investigation into new and suitable structural forms, using new materials and incorporated ES.
