Summary: This project contains the research of storms and natural
disasters, in order to prevent them or alleviate their effects, as
suggested by UN and WMO as a task for 1990 decade for all Member
countries. Most severe storms in Croatia belong to the oreigenic (caused
by orography) type of storms, and their nature could be explained by
the interaction of macro and mesoscale processes in the Alpine area. The
Alpine region modifies and deform the frontal systems, and the splitting
flow over and around the Alps is responsible for the lee cyclogenesis,
the main cause of the storms in the cold part of the year, especially
the Adriatic bura and jugo. In the continental Croatia special attention
is given to the summer storms in unstable air mass which may cause the
large amount of precipitation and the appearance of hail, but there may
be also long dry periods due to the stationary anticyclones.

Research goals: The goal of this research is to find causes of
severe storms in Croatia on synoptic and subsynoptic scale on the basis of
the most intense storm phenomena in last 35 years. The knowledge of
physical origin of these atmospheric processes is a straightforward
contribution to the weather forecast methods (nowcasting and warnings).
