Summary: The national parks in Croatia (Brijuni, Mljet, Kornati, Krka, Paklenica, Plitvice and Risnjak) belong to a region with perfectly developed Karst forms. In these parks on more than 4/5 of the surface area there are hard and pure limestones and dolomites with the following soil development series: melanosols (black earth-soil) - calcicambisols (brown soil on the limestone) - luvisols (illimerized soil). On the saharoidic dolomite the initial stage is the carbonate rendzina. In the littoral, the most frequent soil development stage are terra rossa and calcocambisols derivatives. In the agricultural area, guttered soils of fields and terraces predominate (vitisols and others). The agricultural soils are generally of conserved structures and with a moderate humus content. The essential characteristic of pedochores (pedocartographical units) is their multicomponent composition, they consist of 2-4 pedosystematic units. The altitudinal zonality of soils such as caused by the bioclimatic factor has been determined: the occurrence of terrae rossae typical and brownized in the littoral zone of thermophyl grasslands and degradated pubescent oak stands, the domination of calcicambisols in the zones of littoral and mountain beech forests as well as the domination of melanosols on gradients and peaks of higher montane and premontane belts. By applying the specific-purpose soil classification the following economic characters of pedochores have been determined. Soil susceptibility to erosion by water most often is moderately high, less often moderate or high. In the national parks "Brijuni", "Mljet", "Kornati", "Krka" and "Paklenica", the soils have, as a rule, the neutral and low alkali reaction. The soils in the national parks "Risnjak" and "Plitvice" showed a very large range of the active soil acidity. As far as the pedochores suitability for a functional classification of forest ecosystems is concerned, their antierosive and hydrological functions are in the first place. More than 2/3 of pedochores belong to the classes III and IV for their capacity of afforestation (moderate good and poor soil). Research of the heavy metal accumulation (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn) in the N.P. "Mljet" proved that no significant changes of the natural geochemical environment occurred although the agricultural area shows an increased input of these elements into the soil.

Keywords: soils of karst, national parks, soil mapping, anthropogeneticalevolution of soil, secondary soil classification

Research goals: The idea of the Project is tocontinue the pedological researches on the heritage of the so fargained knowledges and this on the materials from national parks. The objective is, in the region of national parks, to determineand to explain the typical physiography and geographicalregularities of soils, to check the dominant theory about theearth's cover structure, to make the pedological map (Sc.1:25000) and to determine changes in soil natural evolutioncourse and dynamics with special regard to the economic role oftourism and forest management. The expected positive results are:improvement of pedological mapping methods, the better knowledgeof the influence of petrographic, bioclimatic, vegetational andrelief modifications as well as that of eolic deposit on the soilgenesis and geography. Application of these knowledges ispossible and necessary in activities relating to tourism, waterand forest management and landscape planning.
