Summary: Diseases of aquatic organisms represent an essential
problem in the open and closed aquatic ecosystem. Fundamental and
applied investgations of the diseases will focus on the biology and
physiology of the bacteria, parasites, plankton and toxicants, also on
their influence on the morbidity and mortality of juvenile and adult fish
and shellfish. By establishing new methods of diagnostics, the time
necessary for making a diagnosis would be made shorter and the efficiency
of therapy would be stimulated. They would also help to gain the
knowledge of the reservoirs of infection with cultured and natural
stocks of aquatic organisms and would lead to the investigation of their
sources in connection with biotechnological procedures during the
culture and the stress in the environment, respectively.
Investigation would also include reproduction, biotechnology and
nutrition of autochthonous and alochthonous fish and shellfish as they
represent possible stress danger and may induce pathological
changes. Genetic engineering will stimulate obtaining the species,
aquatic organisms resistant to different ecological conditions and
diseases. This will be achieved by the use of specific and sensitive
methods of controlled spawning, genetic techniques to obtain
monosexual male/female and sterile population of aquatic organisms,
respectively, which is an important method for preserving ecological
particularities of an aquatic environment from human activities. New
knowledge will be acquired for the exchange of expensive animal proteins
by specially fermentized proteins of vegetable origin; also knowledge
on prevention from the diseases due to alimentation defficiency.
New methods for protection from the diseases of aquatic organisms will,
in correlation with abiotic and biotic particularities of aquatic
ecosystems, bring to the new knowledge in science how to preserve human
health and environment.
Research goals: The objective of the investigation is to
gain fundamental knowledge of the biology and eco-physiology of the
diseases of aquatic organisms. to develop new methodologies in
preventive and curative therapy of the juvenile and adult organisms
diseases. To gain essential knowledge on the possibilities of genetic
engineering in obtaining specimens and populations more resistant to the
stress conditions and infective agenses, and to determine the
possibilities of controlled rearing and induced spawning of
autochthonous and alochthonous species. To determine essential nutritive
needs of various species and age-cathegories of the fish. To obtain new
aquaculturing technologies based on the basic principles of biological
and physiological particularities of aquatic organisms and biological
particularities of aquatic environment. It is expected to use the obtained
fundamental and applied knowledge for the improvement of aquaculturing
activities both in the security of continuous production on one hand and
in providing healthy and safe products for human food on the other, along
with preserving ecological equilibrium of the aquatorium. To prevent the
possibility of zoonoses spreading by determining pathological changes and
their consecutive danger for the humanity.
