Summary: The large basin of the Mediterranean is distinguished,
fromthe aspect of natural sciences, by many outstanding featuresunique even
according to the world standards. Since the Republicof Croatia in its
littoral region occupies one geographically andclimatically specific part
of the Mediterranean area, thevegetation of the Croatian littoral is
distinguished by a certainspecificity with regard to both the adjacent
regions and theentire Mediterranean. This particular project includes
theplantsociological and syntaxonomic researches of theMediterranean
vegetation in the Croatian littoral as well as thecomparative researches of
that vegetation in relation to thewhole Mediterranean. The researches of
the Croatian littoralvegetation carried out for many years had a
significant influenceon the vegetational researches of the Apennine
peninsula, Sicilyand eastern regions of France, and in that the
contribution ofCroatian botanists to the plantsociological science in the
worldis considerable. As the vegetation comprises a very complexsystem of
factors, the resolving of one scientific probleminvolves the discovery of
several new ones that requiresconstantly more and more detailed scientific
researches, especially on the international and multidisciplinary levels.
Keywords: Plantcosiology, Syntaxonomy, vegetation of the Mediterranean
Research goals: The principle objective (task) of the researches
conducted within the project is to find out regularities in the interaction
between the vegetation and all factors which caused the specific
composition and structure of the Mediterranean vegetation (climate, soil,
lithologic basement, relief, paleographic and paleoclimatic conditions,
anthropogenic influences). To achieve this scientists endeavour to study
and to analyse as much in detail as possible particular forms of the
vegetation on the basis of plantsociological and syntaxonomic features of
its floristic composition. One of the most important results of the recent
researches is defining the stenomediterranean vegetation zone of the
alliance Oleo-Ceratonion in the Croatian littoral which by that,
bioclimatically, becomes attached to the warmer part of the Mediterranean
than it has been considered until now. This offers various possibilities
for further scientific interpretations and can serve as the basis for many
practical interventions. Just to mention one exemple, on the basis of the
vegetation composition it is possible to find out that natural conditions
for the development of winter tourism on the islands of Hvar, Vis and
Lastovo are not at all less favorable that those on the Baleares. The
latest researches showed in a completely new light the composition of the
vegetation in Istria where its markedly refugial character becomes ever
more outlined. Other information about the project.
