Summary: Adriatic fauna and flora remained scarcely known till now,
although the data on diversities and distributional patterns of taxa are
considered to be a basis for many fundamental and applied studies. With an
aim to fill the gap, taxonomic research was undertaken to establish
diversities at study sites, prepare inventories of peculiar east Adriatic
areas, and complement and revise study collections at institutions
collaborating in frames of the present project. In 1991-1993, roughly
250.000 plant and animal specimens were identified to a species level. 34
taxa were not recorded in the Adriatic Sea previously. Inventories of the
Makarska area, the Rijeka Bay, the Puntarska draga, the Pag Island and the
Kornati Archipelago were fulfilled, and some others are in preparation.
Historical aspect of Adriatic taxonomy also was considered. Results in
part were communicated at scientific meetings, about 20 papers appeared,
and some manuscripts on the matter are in editorial processing. Study
collections were enriched by about thousand new exiccata, dry and
liquid-preserved specimens, and microscopic slides.
Research goals: Present knowledge of Adriatic flora and fauna is
rather scarce. Only about 50 % of taxa probably present in the Adriatic
Sea were noted, and many of them were not stored in institute and museum
collections. No inventories ever were accomplished with concernto areas
subjected to pollution and to protected areas, such as marine national
parks. Only few high animal and plant groups werelisted and/or
catalogized, but no edition of the "fauna and flora" type ever has
appeared, and the last monography on Adriatic taxa was issued 30 years
ago. In addition shortly most of Adriatic taxonomists, botanists and
zoologists, will beretired. The scope of this project is to conquer the
catastrophic state described above and, by promotion of Adriatic taxonomy
and biogeography, to create a basis for further fundamental and applied
studies in basic oceanography, ecology, fisheries, and protection of the
Adriatic Sea. This scope should be met by research in relevant coastal and
offshore areas, publishing the data and reviews in scientific,
professional and popular issues, complementing and studies on botanical
and zoological collections, and by training of young persons in taxonomic
research.
