Summary: The subject of work on this project is biology of growth,
regeneration and reproduction of freshwater invertebrates from the
classes Cnidaria and Turbellaria. The effects of low concentrations of
different chemical agents (pesticides, heavy metals, cytostatics) and
physical agents (UV irradiation) on these organisms are studied. During
experiments we monitor resistance of animals, their recovery, appearance
of malformations and dying of treated animals. The ways of regeneration
and processes of differentiation, dedifferentiation and
transdifferentiation of certain cell types, which occur during
regeneration, are monitored. We also introduce cytogenetical methods of
research and study chromosomal and mitotic aberrations due to different
toxic agents.
Keywords: Cnidaria, Turbellaria, regeneration, symbiosis, asexual reproduction, differentiation, transdifferentiation, treatment with chemical and physical agents, chromosomes, mitotic and chromosomal aberrations
Research goals: The aim of research include further investigation of
symbiotic species Hydra viridissima Pallas. Namely, beside the
regeneration process, on this species effects of different agents upon
maintenance of intracellular population of unicellular algae Chlorella are
studied. The great part of research we carry out on species Polycelis
felina. Our goal is to investigate irregularities of cell division and
chromosomal aberrations due to various toxic agents. The aims are also to
establish simply test systems with these organisms which could be use for
the detection of harmul effects of different chemical and physical
agents.
