Summary: We shall investigate the biological and molecular properties of viruses which attack widely grown and cultivated plants, with particular emphasis to the characterization of new viruses or strains, included beginning of the study of viruses which participate in degradation of the forest ecosystems in Croatia. Envisaged is also starting work on the study of virods of grapevine in Croatia. Investigated will also the effect of certain normal components of plant cell on suppression of viral infections.

Research goals: The aim of the project is investigation of plant viruses, and beginning of pl. viroids investigation, particularly from the territory of Croatia with purpose of their characterization and getting insight into their distribution and ecology. Besides citophatic changes, there will be examined natural and experimental virus hosts, their infectivity and pathogenicity, etc. There will be investigated different biophysical, biochemical and generally molecular and biological properties of viruses delt with. Improvements of certain techniques used in plant virus work, particularly serological and electrophoretic ones, is expected. The main investigator A.Z. Štefanac and felow-workers N. Juretić, N. Pleše and Đ. Mamula work for more than 30 years on fundamental investigation of pl. viruses, and Academician D. Miličić, Prof. emeritus A. Šarić and two younger associates (M. Krajačić, N. Bezić) no doubt will contribute to the quality of work. Hence, we expect new contributions to knowing viruses and improve some methods of their investigation. With inclusion of N. Bezić on the project we make efforts to install the scientific trend of work at the Faculty in Split.
