Summary: This exploration was conducted in the following clastic
basins: Trieste-Pazin Basin, Rab-Pag Basin, Northern Dalmatian Basin,
Kaštela-Split Basin, Hvar-Pelješac Basin and West Hercegovinian Basin. We
have studied the shallow-marine carbonates and clastics in these basins,
as well as deep-marine clastics of primarily Paleogene age. The basin
geometry and evolution, starting from disintegration of the carbonate
platform and ending with cessation of the clastic sedimentation in the
basins, was studied in particular. Depending on the degree of exploration,
our understanding of the basin geometry and syn-sedimentary tectonics,
within and around the basin, are different. The Trieste-Pazin Basin,
Northern Dalmatian Basin and Kaštela-Split Basin suffered intensive
effects of the synsedimentary tectonics throughout their evolution,
whereas those effects are harder to reconstruct in the other basins
explored. The sea-level changes and their effects are reconstructed in a
part of the Rab-Pag Basin, Northern Dalmatian Basin, Kaštela-Split Basin
and Hvar-Pelješac Basin. This exploration was based on detailed
sedimentological logging (1:50), detailed mapping of lithofacies (in the
scale of 1:5000; only in the Kaštela-Split Basin), and the study of fossil
flora and fauna (ingenuous and resedimented) as well as ichnofossils.
Chronostratigraphic dating was based on the study of small and larger
benthic foraminifers, and nannofossils.
Research goals: The aim of this exploration was the study of the
composition, infill-style, evolution and possible economic resources in
the Paleogene clasitc basins of the Adriatic belt. Basin formation and
their evolution are directly related to tectonics, and knowledge on basin
evolution contributes indirectly to the understanding of the tectonical
evolution of the studied region. Direct relationship of tectonics and
depositional processes allows for determination of the age of the
individual tectonic events. Basin analysis incorporates the understanding
of the general tectonic setting, basin topography and relationship with
the marginal shallow-marine environments. The basin-fill style reflects
the depositional evolution of a basin, which was conditioned by the
sea-level changes and tectonics. It is possible to reconstruct the
sea-level changes, the effects of tectonics and their relationship,
indirectly from the study of the basin-fill style, so that was one of the
aims of this project. This project also aimed to determine the age of the
sediments studied, after the small and larger benthic foraminifers as well
as nannofossils. One of the aims was also to reconstruct the age of the
resedimented deposits, what indicates the age of the weathered sediments,
and indirectly indicates on the age of the tectonical processes which
created the uplift. The study of geometry of the sedimentary bodies was
also one of the aims of this project, because of the immense economic
importance of some sediments, as the architectural-constructional stone,
cement-marls, as aquifers or foundations of large construction sites.
