Summary: The Project comprises research of structural - textural, petrographic, physico-mechanical and chemical properties of stones with concern to their resistance under unfavourable physical and physico - chemical and climatic conditions. Purpose of research is to prolong the stone lifetime and to improve the already existing and new constructions which have stone as a basic or composite component (roads, buildings, stone coatings and sacral and cultural monuments). Research encloses to solving of problems dealing with structural - textural and petrographic characteristics of solid stone masses in order to solve the problems attached to the stability, optimal orientation of excavation fronts, exploitation and stone block utilization. Special attention is given to the theoretical considerations (speculations), utilization of out own and working out of new mathematical and algorithm models which can define the functional relationships and regularity between structural - textural features mentioned above, and results of physico - mechanical and technical - technological stone properties. This program enclosed research of technical - technological characteristics of technical and dimension stone which in Republic Croatia represent two most significant raw materials after oil, gas and water.

Research goals: The research aim is developing research methodologies to providethe possibility of optimization of different parameters whichappear during research, working out and exploitation of dimensionand technical stone deposits. It also provides the advancement inunderstanding of durability and applicability of stone in varietyof constructions. During various kinds of geotechnical operations, specialemphasis is given to establishment of methods for optimizationof structural-petrographic features of solid stone masses. To enable the proper choice of stone for building in andrebuilding it is necessary to broaden the knowledge abouttechnological properties (sawing possibility, grinding,polishing) and phisical-mechanical and chemical propertiesespecialy in complex curcumstances of urban load and climaticchanges. In this sense we have published several scientific and expertpapers during the period 1991-1995.
