Summary: Complex coal deposits cannot be profitabily and safely exploited by classic mining methods. The alternative is underground gasification (UCG), i.e. transformation of coal mass in the deposit into gas phase and the extraction on the surface of in such a way formed energy resource. In this method it is essential to drive the access to the deposit to provoke and support energetically optimal products. The method is ecologically very favourable, because solid remains of combustion are left in the deposit. By this scientific project basic principles of the method and achievements in the world are studied, as well as the possibilities of its aplications on the deposits of Croatia.

Research goals: The aim of the project is recognizing of the world status and realized results from the methods of underground gasification of coal. Based on technical-economic knowledge of the world achievements, the review of balanced reserves of coal deposits in Croatia has been peformed together with the estimate of their gasification possibilities. The deposits with favourable natural conditions for conducting the gasification procedure have been singled out. In the following period the activities on the project will go on in the direction of: -technical-economic evaluation and mathematical modelling in concrete deposit conditions -gathering of the data on drilled but unbalanced coal reserves by the drilling of oil and gas -analyzing of the possibilities of the existing "Naftaplin" borehole infrastructure for the gasification of the deposit.
