Summary: Expert systems are investigated and their basic components
areimplemented: knowledge bases, inference engine and testingperformed on a
test example, which is a complex task representingthe backbone of ES. We
also keep track of research resultsobtained in this area. Experiments are
made with the availablesoftware dealing with expert systems and its
efficiency isevaluated on the basis of the test example mentioned above.
Research goals: The research work aims at implementing an expert
system on PC, with a possibility of its transfer to a mainframe computer.
The basic algorithms will refer to knowledge bases and inference engine.
It is the general objective of the research to promote developments in the
area of artificial intelligence. Attempts are made to pass from research
stage to application stage, and to achieve a quicker, better, and cheaper
operation results supported by the computer. Our specific objective is the
investigation of different inference-oriented examination algorithms of a
knowledge base. This is the central task in expert system implementation.
In addition to a general-type expert system, an expert system example of
the "expert assistant" type should be selected in order to be used for the
control of complex devices in the application area. Some of the existing
dilemmas should be evaluated with the aim of increasing the research
competence and achievements in the area of expert systems. Namely, there
are different attitudes and questions connected to a number of basic ideas
regarding the expert systems, as for example, whether to use special type
or general type computers for ES; whether to use special languages (LISP,
PROLOG), or standard ones, whether to engage knowledge engineers or
general type engineers, etc. Other information about the project.
