Summary: The goal of the project is, as stated in the Proposal of
May 1st 1992, to upgrade the scientifical/teaching activities at our
Faculty of Mechanical eng. and Naval arch., and later other technical
colleges. To realize that we need: - to compose and constitute such a
laboratory which will promote computer mathematics as a basis for future
engineering activities. It has its models in mathematical laboratories of
other European universities (ETH Zurich, Mathematisches Institut
Heidelberg, Lab fuer Anwendungen Mathematic Essen), utilizing their
experiences and methods of work; - to be involved in the TEMPUS
project (Trans-European Mobility Scheme for University Studies" which has
the same goal: "TEMPUS relates to activities at higher education level";
- to publish related materials (handbooks and student books) for the
mathematical programs, the operating systems and the computer mathematics;
- to organize continued education and instruction for program packages
(for the students, assistants, professors, war veterans, other users);
- to realize adequate mathematical programs and laboratory/educational
models; - to connect the Laboratory with the similar institutions
through the InterNet. The first year of working at this project gives a
numerous results: from 350.000 DEM donated equipment (25 HP workstations)
to the handbooks, programs and various activities in the computer
mathematics in the technical environment. In the second year of the
project the many MATLABs courses are hold out. In the may 1995. the Center
for the computer mathematics are established. It is proved by the Faculty
council. The new programs are composed, and the new projects (based on the
new approach of education) with the foreign professors are arranged.
Research goals: Although mathematics is the backbone of all
technical disciplines, there still doesn't exist a laboratory at our
faculty, which would unite them. The goal of the project is to upgarde the
mathematical-informatical knowledge of the students and professors at the
Faculty of mechanical eng. and naval arch. There is no science develoment
without good basement: excelent teaching, good teaching toolboxes, joy. The
level of knowledge can be changed only if the teaching and curriculum is
efficiently changed. The mathematical laboratory is the place for such
changes. The Lab would be served toward development of general programs
for solving problems in different technical fields: mechanics,
thermodinamics, electrotechnics, hydrodinamics, production engineering and
various technologies. It would be an educational location for the student,
a place for scientific activities and also a place for guest professors to
hold lectures. (We hope that it will be used also for resocialization of
war veterans). The following results would be expected: - publishing of
several (pedagogicaly) good handbooks for the computer, programs and the
computer mathematics; - the computer programs from the various subjects
which would be used in the teaching (teaching toolboxes); - the algorithms
and computer programs from the various subjects which solve the technical
problems on the new way (with publishing in the world known journal, such
as the International Journal of Computer Mathematics); - connecting the
joung scientist to the common problems (computer-mathematics research). -
joining the europen TEMPUS project; - the representative role of
mathematical laboratory in the teachin of students, resocialization of war
veterans, scientific project;
