Summary: Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) offer wide universal
possibilities of manufacturing various products differing from each other
by constructional and technical characteristics, as well as by quantities
and production dynamics on the same manufacturing system. However, along
with increasing demands for system flexibility, due to the increase in
production products assortment, manufactured on the same manufacturing
system, the impacts on production quality, on the system's productivity, on
the amount of financial investments and therefore, on the cost of the
product, are getting more complex. At the same time, the manufacturing
system control is becoming more complex due to the increase in the number
of factors involved in the production process. By investigating the nature
of the problem, analysing the single factors impact, especially the
strength of their effects on the quality of the total manufacturing system
functioning, will result in defining the method of project operation which
will enable to choose the optimal relations between important factors such
as: flexibility, quality, productivity, economy. The intent is to develop a
suitable computer software support (CAPP) for the entire operation of
manufacturing systems project.
Keywords: Flexibility, flexible manufacturing system, manufacturing system control, process grouping method, production process optimization
Research goals: The objective of the research is to asses optimal
flexibility limits of the manufacturing system, related to the production
assortment and its quantities and production dynamics, in order to assure a
satisfactory quality, productivity, reliability and economy level of
production. The research will enable to identify all the variables
determining the relations between important factors of production process
(production program, production equipment, transport equipment, information
system, space, costs, staff...), then the patterns and values of their
impact on the manufacturing systems quality in given production conditions
will be assessed, in order to define practically applicable method in frame
of the project and the choice of an optimal manufacturing system model for
product processing. It is expected, through research implementation, to
contribute in establishing of experiences and knowledge that will increase
the transfer of world knowledge in the field of manufacturing systems
projects. It is estimated that, based on this research, a number of
scientific works will be published, at least one doctoral thesis and one
master's thesis. A development of software programs for manufacturing
systems project is also expected. Other information about the project.
