Summary: Activities of people and exhaust gases pollute the Earth's
atmosphere in a great degree. Further expansion of communication in the
world, development of tourism, and keeping pace with the developed
countries reguire acceptance and application of European standards. In the
proposed project the following items are planned: - Stating and analysis of
the air-pollution rate in Croatia related to the harmful components in
exhaust gases - Measures to be taken regarding the international
regulations about the exhaust gas content - Research on possible
application of electrical energy and concept design of an electromobile -
Theoretical consideration of emission and exhaust gas content which should
be substantiated by measurements. The work on this project should be a part
of the environment preservation activities especially those related to
pollution coused by motor vehicles.

Research goals: The planned research should study the density of
traffic, find out and analyze the condition of current vehicles, and
assess the effect of automobiles on the air pollution, for Croatia and the
city of Zagreb. A prognosis will also be given regarding the traffic
development and vehicles design, and the related changes in the effect on
the environment in subsequent period. The influence on the environment will
be assessed on the basis of current and foreseen legal standards in our
country as well as world-wide. It proves necessary to take into
consideration the extremely strict standards in the developed European
countries as well as the restraint of the less developed countries
burdened with even more traffic, regarding the implementation speed of
these legislative regulations. The results of the research will be used to
influence the changes in the design of vehicles and to reduce the adverse
effects of automobiles on the environment. It is important to study the
effects of constructional improvements such as petrol injection, lambda
sensor, catalytic converter, as well as changes in the combustion process,
conversion to diesel engine propulsion, alternative fuel applications etc.
The application of electric battery powered automobiles would contribute
tremendously to solve the ecological problems. Should this concept be
realized successfully, it could be a basis for establishing a centre of
the motor-industry in Croatia, which has until now been completely
neglected. It is also necessary to classify the rate at which various
sources pollute the environment. There are often very different and even
false statements given on this subject, especially in the mass-media.
