Summary: The optimalization of a merchant ship's exploitation is
theprocedure by which the ship's efficiency is to be increased interms of
better operability and higher profitability. There aretwo spheres the
optimalization refers to: the ship's designing, during which her future
characteristics can be influenced, andthe exploitation of the existing
ship, whose characteristicscan't be changed, but can be exploited more
appropriately. Thisship's efficiency depends on many factors: on the wind
and seacondition the ship will encounter, on the exploitation roughnessof a
hull and a propeller and on its progression, on the"elasticity" of the
propulsion plant and on the extent of"spontaneous" response, on the freigh
rate which variesperiodically, on the fuel cost which also varies trough
the timeend from port to port, on the reliability, on themaintenance power
and expenses of ship's plants and onthe ship's aging. By calculation and
model simulations and byresearches on exploiting ships, the occurence and
theinfluence of particular factors to the "behaviour" of theparticular type
of a merchant ship have been estabilished inorder to form global or partial
mathematical model, to define theproject task, based on the sufficient
number of preciseparameters, for the design elaboration and decision-making
duringthe ships exploitation.
The Research was extended to the problem of contamination of coastal waters
by nomidigenous sea species by ballast waters and its prevention by
treatment of ballast water on board of the ship.
Research goals: This project is filling the gap between the
parameters taken intoaccount when designing a ship and the parameters
measured in theconditions of the sea trials on the one hand and real
conditionson the other hand, which arise where the ship is being
exploited. Therefore, it has been necessary to develop adequatelly
adaptedmeasuring device, to determine the methodology of measuring
theparameters as well as the parameters themselves and organize
thecollecting, delivery and analysis of the results of themeasurment. As
the researches are done aboard the vessels in service, whichmakes the
research more difficult, a part of the results has beenobtained by
symulation, extrapolation and finally by statisticalanalysis and the laws
of predictability. The following areas were analysed: 1. The speed of
the vessel in relation to the hull form, thetype and the power of the
propulsion plant, exploitationroughness of the underwater part of the
hull, the wind and seacondition, freight rate, transhipment and storage
capabilities, fuel prices, the number and the qualification of the crew as
wellas the port dues and norms. 2. Specific and interactional analyses
of the vessel's plantswhich has comprised availability, maintanbility,
redundancy, operational reliability and reliability with repairs from
thepoint of view of the safety and terotehnological process onboard.
3. The analyses of the automation of the ship's propulsionand managing
plants, in the aim to establis spontaneity inresponse to the sudden
changes in the enviroment. 4. Analysis of the problem of ballast water
minimization due to contamination risk of coastal waters by nonindigenous
sea specics. The results achieved so far are the following: ad 1.1.
Establishing the metod for the calculation of thecondition of "the service
mean point" in a ship's life span. 1.2. The affirmation of the notion
of "commercial speed" ascontinuous variable and the way of calculating it.
1.3. The discovery of the "running tetragon" as a whole
of(commercial) speeds of the vessel and thus non-existency of theone
unique speed for the optimalization of the project and themethod (and the
program) for the calculation of it. ad 2.1. On the basis of the analysis
of the operationalreliability and the reliability with repairs
determiningindispensable redundancy in the ship's plants 2.2.
Estabilishing the form for the "maintenance powerequation" with the
purpose of setting the conveniency betweenvarious projects of the vessels,
as well as for theoptimalization of the number and the qualification of
the crew.
2.3. Establishing "limit criterion of ship's operability" for thecritical
analysis of the complexity and the duration of themaintenance action in
the period of the maintenance which shouldbe done within the port, to
avoid delay. ad 3. After collecting the results of the research so far
donethe analysis of them is being caried out by the methods ofsymulation
and the mathematical model is being developed within adoctoral thesis. ad
4. Collecting of bibliography directly from IMO and Australian Quarantine
& Inspection Service as well as from relevant Congreses & Symposiums. ad
1,2,3 Determining a new, more complex approach to the projecttask and
establishing the methods of the formulation andmathematical checking of
it.
