Summary: The project refers to physical oceanographic parameters of coastal and insular areas of the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea, such as; waves, winds, sea levels, currents, sea temperature and salinity. Systematization of the existing knowledge on the above parameters is essential, as in this area there are numerous touristic, nautical, sea traffic and municipal facilities with their specific ecological parameters. All these facilities are potential polluters, and at the same time most of them impose high ecological demands. Defining of the above parameters would elevate the theoretical basis for optimum designing of facilities in the coastal zone. The analysis of relevant natural phenomena would be carried out by direct measurements, physical and mathematical modelling.

Keywords: waves, winds, sea levels, currents, sea temperature, oceanographic measurements, wind and wave climate, ecology

Research goals: The objective of this project is to define the statistical and spectral characteristics of wind and wave climate and tide in typical coastal and insular regions of the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. As regards the currents, the project provides for defining of the vertical profile of directions and velocities for typical closed island basins by seasons, and defining of other physical characteristics of the sea would include measurements of sea temperature and salinity. From the scientific standpoint it would be very useful to observe and process, at the same time, biological and chemical characteristics of the sea, for ecological purposes, using the oceanographic ship, i.e. to add a similar subject to the present. The contribution of this research is formation of theoretical precepts, as well as quantifying of oceanographic parameters for optimum designing of facilities for sea traffic, nautical tourism and underwater discharges, with a view of prevention of pollution of the Adriatic Sea.
