Summary: Finding of optimum design and construction solutions of
hydroamelioration drainage systems is the basic precondition for successful
crop farming and agricultural development in general. Performing of this
task requires previous field survey and investigations, as well as
appropriate analyses and estimates. The data on construction and
maintenance of hydroamelioration drainage systems in the period from 1975
to 1990 were systematized, covering 28 amelioration areas in Croatia (total
1,789,070 ha). Based on important field characteristics and specific
requirements of particular crops, it is essential to define the major
design features of hydroamelioration drainage systems, as well as
quantities of major amelioration works. This also includes determining of
construction costs, as well as maintenance costs of amelioration systems,
with respect to the influence of costs on crop farming. The objective of
the research is to apply the results in order to develop the construction
and maintenance standards for hydroamelioration systems in Croatia, as such
standards had not been elaborated by 1990. On the basis of optimum
construction solutions, the level of water management compensation will be
determined to cover the costs of regular maintenance of hydroamelioration
drainage systems, with a view of their efficient performance, i.e.
maintaining of the optimum water and air regime on agricultural land.
Research goals: The principal objective of the project is to find
optimum design and construction solutions for hydroamelioration drainage
facilities and systems. The existing experience has indicated inadequate
understanding of influences of local features in amelioration areas on the
construction and maintenance costs of drainage facilities and systems.
Therefore, the research process included some analyses and estimates in
order to define optimum design and construction elements. In this
framework, some natural, technical, as well as financial indices were
obtained for design and construction solutions, and also for maintenance
costs.
