Summary: It is shown that if the stress is a stationary narrow band
Gaussian random process, then the peaks have the Rayleigh distribution. The
variable-amplitude service life is predicted by using an adaptation of the
Palmgren-Miner damage model to find the damage caused by each
stresss-cycle.The cumulativ total of all cyclic damages is then used to
predict the expected mean time to failure. The results are ploted for
different values of system damping.Numerical examples are given to
illustrate the simplicity and accuracy of the approach method.
Keywords: random vibrations,random stress process,fatigue failure,ideal white noise,stationary process,ergodic process
Research goals: A random vibration is one whose instantaneous value
is notpredictable. Although the time variation of the random vibration
cannot be predicted, the probability of a given value being within a
certain range is predictable on statistical basis. At moment I am
interested in random vibrations largely because of its ability to cause
failure! When the stress is a stationary narrow-band Gaussian random
process, the problem of predicting fatigue failure becomes very
difficult. The theory of fatigue of metals is far from complete although
the general outlines seem to be well establised. The method is presented
by which the safety of the building against earthquake can be estimated
in terms of the probability of failure. The results of analysis are
programmed for numerical evaluation of the inputs. The analysis of this
type may be usefully employed for the economic design of tall buildings,of
nuclear power industry and many other vital and complex engineering
systems. This statistical display of structural response gives engineers
more confidence in designing the structure then the deterministic manner.
