Summary: Regarding targets and metodology this project consists of
two different segments. Both of them are unified through the goal expressed
in the title of the project. One segment is dedicated to the development
and implemantation of computerized modules of health care information
systems capable for assesment and follow-up of the quality of health care
and the decision-making support on the level of helath care maneger.
Developed modules have considerable analytical potential. The other segmet
of the project deals with the length of stay in hospitals as a measure of
quality of care assuming that the length of stay is indirectly but
significantly connected with the outcome of health care which has been
shown as the most valid measure of quality of health care. Nevertheless it
is related to social and economic expenditures for health care. Lengths of
stay for most common conditions have decreased over the past twenty years.
This has been particularly true for elective surgery. Elective abdominal
hysterectomy has been chosen for this investigation. Two university
hospitals were involved and two regional hospitals as well. The last two
dropped out due to the war situation in the country. Until now 139 patients
were included into study and followed-up to third post-operative month.
This part of the project is conducted in informal cooperation with the
North West Thames Hysterectomy Study Team of the London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine.

Research goals: Develpoment of an module for quality of medical care
assesment and assurance as a part of a computerized health information
system as well as development of an analytical module for the support of
decision-making of the health care manager. The impact of the length of
hospital stay on medical outcomes. To examine the extent to which the rate
of readmissions to hospital is a reliable and valid indication of the
quality of care. To examine the impact of the different lengths of hospital
stay on the social and economic costs of treatment. Other information about the project.
