Summary: Blood flow characteristics were measured in patients with
hystologically proven cervical cancer and compared to normal values. Flow
parameters were derived by pulsed and colour Doppler ultrasound. The
results show a significant difference in the mean values of resistance
index and pulsatility index between the diseased patients and controls.
Ony patients who were treated by radiation, chemotherapy or combination
thereof have been considered so that a five years follow-up is possible.
The specificity is unsuficient for screening purposes. The method is not
sufficiently sensitive for breast cancer evaluation.
Keywords: ultrasound, Doppler, colour Doppler, cancer of the uterine cervix, cancer, pulsatility index, resistance index, breast, breast cancer, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, cancer follow-up
Research goals: The aim of the research is to develop a method for
evaluation of the success of radiotherapy or chemotherapy of cervical
cancer. Early detection of unsufficient radicality or recurence of the
disease would improve the chances for the success of the treatment. We
expect to see that the blood flow indices return to normal in successfully
treated patients. The time scale of the research (5 years) is determined by
the speed of the cancer growth and rules of vital statistics. Other information about the project.
