Summary: The aim of this investigation was to explore biochemical patterns present in the endogenes psychoses. We compared 42 patients diagnosed as maior depression (MD) with 54 schizophrenic patients (SCH). The complete clinical and laboratory investigations were performed with special regard to the biochemical analisys of neurotransmitters and its metabolites as well as on psychological tests. The results have shown that the blood level of serotonin, prolactin, adrenalin, noradrenalin and 24 hours concetration of 5-HIAA in urine are rather low in the group MD, especially in those patients with strong suicidal tendencies. Opposite results have been observed in the group SCH which are simular to the finding observed during the manic phase of bipolar affective disorder.( LDH< 0.01, GamaGT <0.001, Serotonin<0.001 , 5-HIAA in 24h urine <0.05 ). These results correlate with psychis states measured by Overall's brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS), Hamilton's depression scale (HAMD) and Beck questionary (BECK). (BPRS :NS, HAMD:<0.001, BECK:<0.001,). It is very important for the therapeutic treatment of these disorders. This research was performed at the Psychiatric Department of Clinical Hospital "Sestre Milosrdnice" in Zagreb.
