Summary: The results of neurophysiological and psychological
examinations of prisoners of war will be compared to the results obtained
in subjects in comparative groups in order to determine possible damage to
the brain and brain functions, occurring as a consequence of maltreatment
during captivity. The dynamics and extent of recovery of the changes found,
the occurrence of PTSD and other mental disorders and neurological
complications will be estimated by longitudinal follow-up of
neurophysiological parameters, test of cognitive functions and
characteristic traits. An attempt will be made to determine the conditions
which potentiate the occurrence of PTSD, other mental disorders and
neurological complications and optimal measures by which such complications
can be avoided, their intensity alleviated or duration reduced. A possible
correlation between cognitive deficits and existing mental disorders will
be investigated.
Keywords: Prisoners of war, Psychophysiology, Electroencephalography, Neuropsychology, Cerebral cartography, Evoked potentials.
Research goals: To investigate the possible effects of
psychophysical maltreatment of the brain and cogitive functions, using
neurophysiologic and psychologic methods. To determine the dynamics and
extent of remission of defects and the possible occurrence of posttraumatic
complications, by means of a longitudinal follow-up study of
neurophysiological parameters. To determine the prevalence of posttraumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) immediately after release. Follow up the occurrence
of other forms of psychic disorders. To assess the prognostic validity and
the degree of correlation between the analyzed neurophysiologic parameters,
cognitive deficits, PTSD and other psychic disorders. The results of this
study can offer important new uderstanding about temporary and permanent
damage to the brain and its functions.
