Summary: Various plant species of the Croatian flora yet
unresearched in terms of their chemism and pharmacological effect have
been examined. Micromeria thymifolia, Satureja montana, Satureja
subspicata, Helychrisum italicum, Teucrium arduini and Teucrium flavum
have been tested for the quantity, composition and biological effect of
essential oil. As far as active compounds are concerned, triterpene,
saponins and flavonoids have been isolated. Chromatography and mass
spectroscopy have been applied to characterize the isolated compounds.
Alkaloids, whose cytostatic effect was confirmed by biological tests, have
been isolated. Chemical testing of Caucalis platycarpos indicated the
presence of sitosterol, scopoletin, tannin, lignin and flavonoids. Ononis
natrix, Tanacetum parthenium, Solidago gigantea, Solidago canadensis,
Solidago virgaurea have been examined for their diuretic effect.
Antimicrobial activity (gram negative, gram positive bacteria and fungi)
has been tested in Berberis croatica, Eleuterococcus senticosus, Glycine
hispida, Micromeria thymifolia. Special emphasis has been given to the
effect on dermatophytes. Several extracts of Pelargonium radula were
tested on hypoglicaemic effect. The content and composition of the
essential oil from Micromeria thymifolia and Helichrysum italicum were
determined. Comparative phytochemistry investigation of genus Symphytum
showed a presence of saponins, flavonoids and triterpenoids. The
triterpenic acids were isolated from Micromeria thymifolia.
Research goals: The flora of Croatia is characterized by great
variety and numberof species. Many species have not yet been researched in
terms oftheir chemism and pharmacological effect. Continuous search
fornew biologically active compounds is necessary, which
includesexamination of unexplored medicinal plants Croatia abounds
in.Finding new active principles in natural resources is certainly
asignificant contribution to pharmacy, particulary at a time
whenphytoterapeutics are gaining more and more importance in
medicaltreatment. Alkaloid drugs such as Doronicum austriacum and
Berberiscroatica belong to the group of yet unexplored Croatian
plants.Alkaloids with proved cytostatic effect have been isolated
fromDoronicum austriacum. New areas of biological
activity(microbiological) have been found for the alkaloid in
Berberiscroatica. Antimicrobial activity has also been tested
inEleuterococcus senticosus and Glycine hispida. The content , composition
and microbiological activity of Micromeria thymifolia and Helichrysum
italicum were performed. The plants showed a wide activity on bacteria,
fungi and dermatophytes. The phytochemical investigation and biological
activity of Pelargonium radula, Tanacetum parthenium and Symphytum
officinale were perfprmed.
