Summary: Introduction into the production and use of less known
vegetable cultivars, tends to contribute to the food culture of
population in Croatia, in tourism bidding and the export. Biological
properties of the selected yard long bean, pak-choi, head chicory,
broccoli and kiwano cultivars are investigated in various methods of
growth, together with their nutritional value, keeping quality conditions
and production profitability. The technology research lays main stress on
ecologically acceptable fertilizing and protection against pests. This
scope comprehends the research of possible vesicular-arbuscular
mycorrhize introduction into production technology of vegetable
transplants. This research comprehends the selection of appropriate
cultivars and perspective technological solutions for various growth
methods in production. For selected cultivars the nutritional value,
keeping quality and storage conditions are determined. Various
technologies of an early growth of cucumbers for processing, tend to
answer the question of cucumber dawny mildew control with protection
measures, which will satisfy existing limitations, whereby a certain
progress is made. Collection, evaluation and classification of domestic
vegetable landraces from Brassica and Capsicum genus, make a steadily
active basis for the selections of new cultivars. In 1993 a new cultivar
tomato shaped pepper "Majkovačka" was recognized. Some local landraces
of dry bean were tested for their morphological and biological
properties. A portion of this research is published or is in print.

Research goals: Some about 150 vegetable species are grown in the
world, but inour country only about 40.Introduction into production and
use ofless known species would contribute to the food culture of
thepopulation, tourism bidding and the export. Investigations ofbiological
characteristics for the cultivars of yard long bean (Vigna sesquipedalis),
pak-choi (Brassica chinensis), broccoli (B. oleracea var. italica), head
chicory (Cichorium intybus var. foliosum) and kiwano (Cucumis metuliferus)
under inland ecological conditions and various growth methods, are made in
an attempt to discover the optimal technological methods for profitable
production. The appearance of pests is followed and identified, and their
reasonable control tested. An ecologically acceptable fertilizing is
examined. Duration and keeping quality conditions and nutritional value,
are investigated. Testing of application effect of induced
vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhize in the production of transplants for
the various vegetable species, willd potentially reduce the use of mineral
fertilizers and pesticides. Mass expansion of cucumber disease caused by
dawny mildew, requires growth technology search aiming, at least partially
to avoid the infection at picking period, onset together with protection
measures to satisfy existing limitations. New vegetable cultivars
selection and improvement of the present on the bases of collected
domestic landraces, is a steady work for achievement of adaptability under
ecological conditions of production areas, and required qualitative and
quantitative properties.
