Summary: Untill relativelyrecently many plantationsof autochthonous origin were grubbed up and liable to deterioration. The concept genetic erosion is mainly used to denote deterioration of either individual or complex genes of defined plant species. Through this project we managed to select some clones and phenotypes from autochtonous, domestic and introduced populations of grapevine, olive, almond, marasca sour cherry, fig and carob cultivars. Their biological, phenological, morphological, physiological and technological characteristics were investigated. These properties were described according to IBPGR (International Board for Plant Genetic Resources) descriptors, that are compatibile with the world information systems. Some collection plantations of grapevine, olive, almond, marasca sour cherry, fig and carob cultivars are also errected to preserve the genofund. The researches included the reproduction of plant material by "mist" method, grafting and micropropagation.

Keywords: olive, almond, fig, carob, maraska sour cherry, vinegrape, selection, collection plantations, autochtonous, domestic, introduced cultivars, description, morphological, biological, physiological, technological, phenological characteristics, IBPGR method, reproduction of plant material, mist method, grafting method, micropropagation

Research goals: The main goal of this research is to record the actual state of the genofund in southern Croatia of the following fruit-tree species: olive, almond, fig, carob, marasca sour cherry and grapevine, furthermore, to select from populations the fenotypes and clones with positive characteristics and to investigate their phenological, morphological, biological, and technological characteristics. By establishing the new collection plantations, apart from the protection of fruit tree genofund, we plan to increase the interest of different institutions for genetic resources of fruit tree species (for the genofund that will serve to creation of new cultivars with better characteristics), and to make possible the exchange of genetic material both in Croatia and throughout the world.
