Summary: The research began in January, 1991 on two locations: Belje and the Experimental Station Sljeme of Faculty of Agriculture near Zagreb. Due to war the research on Belje was not able to continue. Research was carried out on Charolais x native cattle (Istrian, Gray and Simmental) crosses. The productivity of calves was evaluated by measuring body weight and daily gain during the grazing season. During the second year growth of calves in the suckler herd was analysed. Investigation was carried out on 30 calves from birth to 1 year of age in the highland condition. By the modified Brody curve live weight, daily gain and intensity of growth in the particular time points was estimated. Carcass traits was evaluated at the slaughter house: conformation, randement, Milan cut, etc. In addition, the effect of restrictive feeding in winter on cow and calf performance were investigated. The experiment was carried on 22 cows. During the experiments the productivity and economic effect were evaluated.

Research goals: Research on biological bases and economic effect of introducing beef cattle into intensive agriculture in Croatia was carried out in order to evaluate basic biological factors of beef calves production (effect of environment, adequate housing, control of reproduction, productivity) and economic effects. It is necessary to find out scientific answers for possible satisfactory operations for making bases for beef production in Croatia as in highland region so as in plain region with the intensive agriculture. Furthermore utilization of quantity of agrarian wastes of great energetic values was going to be evaluated.
