Summary: Agriculture capacities in the Republic of Croatia are mostly private, with tendency of increasing them trough the ownership transformation. In the period 1945-90 agricultural production on family farms was constantly destimulated with administrative limitations, tax and price policy and other agricultural policy measures. The results of this is a small average farm size, poor equipment, low intensity of production, low market realization degree, and high share of farms wich combine agriculture income with income outside of agriculture. In order to advance agricultural production ana welfare of the family living on the farms some changes are necessary.Fammily farms as framework of Croatian agriculture need to be modernized, their structure of production must be changed and average farm size increased. The research of socioeconomis characteristics could help in consolidation of fammily farms and give firm basis for creating a suitable development policy.
