Summary: Artichoke is the plant of the worm climate and grow in the
regions where the middle winter temperature are not below the 4-5 C.
Thanks to the climate and pedological conditions of Mediterranian it is
cultivated here (90 % of world production is organized in the
mediterranean countries). Every growing region needs specific production
technology. The main problems are : propagation way (vegetative and
generative ), planting date (autumn or spring ); assortment, the density;
fertilizing and the beginning of harvest. This experiment was established
with purpose to give us the answer on mentioned question. So we made
trials with generative and vegetative multiplication; summer and autumn
planting; different plant density and comparison between six foreign
cultivars and domestic one (as a test).
Research goals: Nutrient and health value is besides rentability the
main reason of growing of this culture in mediterranean region. We don't
see the reason why this culture would not have the position in Croatia
like in others countries (in Italy and France artichoke is the second
vegetable culture). With its introduction in the regular vegetable
production on the coastal part of Croatia it is possible to get the
following: - the possibility of better exploitation of soils in the
South Croatia (coast and islands). - the better offer on the green
market at the coastal and the continental part of Croatia. - the
possibility of export to other countries and the improvement at
turistic offer. - induction of the development of little family farms.
By introduction and examination of new cultivars, examination of planting
date and the way of production of plantlets, we should get the expecting
artichoke production technology for the South Croatia. The results of
vegetatively propagated cultivars showed that cultivars Romanesco and
Catanese were satisfying according to date of harvest and total yield.
Cultivar Violetto di Provenza was more sensitive to low temperatures so
our opinion is that trials sholud be performed on warmer localities.
Further conclusion is that Domaća Viška can be classified as late
cultivar. The further selection work should involve whole domestic
artichoke population. The results related to the yield per plant; the
average head weight; the qualitiy of the head are more valuable when
compared to similar trials in other Mediterranean countries.
