Summary: Tourist trade and space are interrelated elements relevant in the adequate use of tourist resources which have to be protected from all possible devastation. In order to achieve these goals, it is necessary to classify tourist resources and identify the degree of their damage and protection. It is also necessary to envisage an appropriate organization of space linked to the entire tourist supply side on both local and regional levels. The real value of tourist resources depends on their availability i.e. on a global system of communications and infrastructure. Therefore, a tourism development policy should be introduced basing on the assessment of positive and negative effects of tourism upon space.

Research goals: The main aim of this research is directed toward: 1)identification of the spatial elements of Croatia's tourist resources, 2) identification of their spatial distribution 3) defining their accessibility and 4) defining the standards for the optimal utilization of the space. The identification of the elements of Croatia's tourist resources includes the defining of the natural and man-made attractions as well as the protection of the natural and cultural heritage. The adjustement of the spatial distribution of the tourist infrastructure and tourist facilities aims toward the optimal development of the tourist supply and toward attracting the potential demand. The analysis of the accessibility should definethe fundamental transportational infrastructure necessary for the development of tourism as well as for the organization of the transport in the tourist resource area. The experiences of the countries with a highly developed tourism must be analyzed in order to examine the possibilities for their application on Croatia's tourist legislation. It is expected that the results of such an interdisciplinaryapproach would help understanding the complex correlation betweentourism and space, and of it's ecological dimension. The aim ofthe successful economical valuation of the tourist resources isnot only to protect them from the different forms of devastation,but in the same time to improve the resources through the correctutilization. The manyfold contribution of this work can reflectupon the improvements in the field of tourism and through thecorrect utilization on the protection of Croatias's natural andcultural heritage.
