Summary: The failure of wider use of programmed education as
standard form of Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) should be assigned to
usual slowness in taking over inovations in educational process. It was
tried to include computers in traditional programmes of education, what
invoked resistance of teachers as well as students. While the programmes
and other products created in english speaking countries are widely
spreading, because they use standard words and abbreviations, the texts on
programmed lessons on english are hard to translate, and they are not
appropriate by their contents too. Programmed lessons are not able to
satisfy students who are out of schools flooded with much better and
interesting contents and media. New technologies in hardware and software
areas promisse certain turnover in computer use from boaring tutor to
knowledgable mentor. They are so new, as we've learned through our frequent
international contacts, that their application is very rare. When the
project where the inovations in the field of hypermedia had a distinguished
role was suggested and accepted, we couldn't imagine how right we were when
great and fast changes in hardware as well as in programme support are
happening as we speak. We had to move on from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1,
from 1.1 version of Toolbook to version 1.5, from Hypercard 2.1 first to
Supercard, than to Hypercard 2.2. Although the financial support is getting
lower; whole faculty comparing to others in Rijeka and Zagreb is the least
equiped with the computers; we've managed to get a new graphical and
video-card, sound-card (for PC/AT, 80386, 25 MH) and CD-ROM and additional
4 MByte RAM for Macintosh. This equipment mainly purchased with amount of
30.000 DEM, which was donated by Ministry way back in 1990, had to be made
hypermedial. Additionally, we've forced to use nonlicenced software as
Guide for Windows, HSCIA and AuthorwarePro, all for PC, in otder to keep
pace with development of multimedia products. Comparing all these
programmes in quality, use, price and complexity, we have estimated that
the new version of Toolbook (v.1.5) is suitable for simple work, while the
AuthorwarePro is very expencive and it would be more suitable with new
versions of Microsoft products. Work on Macintosh is much easier, Supercard
is excellent, we have not aquired the newest version of Hypercared yet, but
what we've heard about it should be even better than the previous versions.

Research goals: By continuous monitoring of events in areas of
information technologies we've established those fields which will greatly
influence the CAL in next few years. The aims of new research in the field
of CAL are to find the way to adjust the students to the needed way of
thinking - accepting the computer as the universal aid in all activities
from games to finding out knowledge and advice. Further more, there has to
be found the most suitable programme product for teacher-users, which will
lead them in analysing the lessons and exercises in the most simple way. At
the end, the obvious increasing compatibility between TV-technology and
computer should be used in multimedial purpose with new available resources
(hardware and software). Applying the experience aquired by using VIDEODAT
modem on Pro 7 TV station and Mosaic programme for Internet-WWW (already
applied in our department), we're preparing organisation of electronic
bulletin which should be edited by supervised students of informatics and
could be distributed through BBS-es, and if there is any succes, even
through WWW. The work on hardware definition of so-called Vademecum, what
is more appropriate aname than PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), continues,
and also assume the role of tutor, not only assistant working in world net.
