Summary: The aim of the project is to research and explain, in the
most comprehensive, methodological and conceptually coherent manner, the
religious situation obtaining in the Croatia of the 1990s. Using various
quantitative and qualitative methods, data will be gathered which refers to
sociographic indicators, sociological and psychological correlates and
determinants in classic religiousness, indifference and atheism, secular
religiousness and small religious communities. Mutual relations of these
phenomena will also be investigated. Of particular importance is
longitudinal research, i.e., the possibility to compare religious
situations in the Zagreb region (as they existed) during the past two
decades. Certain characteristic processes within a particular Church, with
special emphasis on Catholicism and small religious communities, including
acceptance of their dogmatic systems, will be studied. Critical analysis of
existing theoretical orientations and methodologies is designed to achieve
an approach to religion and atheism that would be able to research and
explain the phenomena in question as comprehensively as possible.
Keywords: religious situation, social changes, religiousness, nonreligiousness, atheism, indifference, secular religiousness, small religious communities, Church trends, dialogue, aspects of religion, secularization, religious revival, Marxism, humanism, theories of religion, methodological approach
Research goals: The aim of the proposed project is to obtain
empirical andtheoretical knowledge regarding the religious situation in
the Croatia of the 1990s that is as comprehensive as possible. Specific
targets: 1) to define the distribution, structure and forms of
traditionalreligions; all forms of divorce, separation and alienation
fromit (indecision, indifference, nonreligiousness, atheism) as wellas of
secular forms of religiousness; 2) to define the social and psychological
correlates anddeterminants of traditional and secular religiousness (as
well asall forms of divorce and detachments from it); to define
therelations between secular and traditional forms of religiousness; 3) to
define changes (third research in the past two decades) inthe religious
situation in the Zagreb region; 4) to study certain trends (at the level of
doctrine and itsacceptance) within the post-Council Church in Croatia and
within Zagreb's small religious communities; 5) to determine the
sociographic indicators andsocio-psychological correlates of congregations
with small religious communities in urban conditions; 6) to undertake
critical valorization of the theoretical and methodological approaches to
religion and atheism in the world aswell as in Croatia in order to
establish the level at which existing theories (and alienations) can be
productive in both the research and explanation of those phenomena. From
the scientific aspect this is a precondition for the further development
of thesociology of religion and will contribute to the advance of
fundamental knowledge about social consciousness and the socialprocesses
faced with changes now taking place within our society. Specific result:
publication of two Doctoral theses. Other information about the project.
