Summary: This research has been inspired by the research work of R.
Calori, G. Johnson and P. Sarnin (1990) who have shown that cognitive
analysis models and techniques can be usefully applied to gain managerial
understanding of industries. However, we do not intend to formulate our
project as a replication of their study but we do intend to use some of
their results as our starting questions. Those authors have drawn
attention that the strategies of organisations are the product of
managerial decisions which, in themselves, are influenced by the cognitive
frames of reference of managers. If we are to understand how strategies
come about it is, therefore, important to understand these frames of
reference. These may be elicited in a number of ways, but the most obvious
one is to allow managers to discuss their views on what they see as most
significant about the situations they face with, and their responses to
those situations. The results therefore will contribute to the
integration of research in comparative management and research of industry
influence on strategy formulation (Huff, 1982; Spender, 1989). The study
will facilitate the identification of similarities and differences
regarding the attitudes towards industry: between business and church
organisations, within and among different branches of industry. This
research will also allow an examination of the extent of commonalities and
differences of understanding at the industry and country level and
identify the existing attitudes towards ethics and moral.

Research goals: We want to create a cognitive model which represents
relationships among cognitive elements that are being studied. Cognitive
model (Fletcher and Huff, 1990) consists of: 1. Maps that asess attention
and importance of concepts; 2. maps that show dimensions of categories and
cognitive taxonomies; 3. maps that show influence, causality and system
dynamics. By this research we wish to investigate the following: First, we
wish to uncover and describe the forces and the relationships among them
perceived by managers as being significant in the transformation of the
industry. Second, our aim is to explore the notion that such forces are
layered; that they exist at different levels of generality, with different
scope. Specifically, we recognize that there must be individual managers'
frames of reference and there are likely to be organisational frames of
reference. Third, we want to examine the differences that exist among
frames of reference, in particular how top managers in different branches
of industry differ and how they make sense of their changing industry
environment. The findings should, therefore, be viewed not so much in terms
of the extent to which they yield new insights into the structure and
dynamics of the business environment of Croatia, but rather as showing
what managers see as most important, and the extent to which there are
similarities and differences in this respect. Other information about the project.
