Summary: The project provides for 3 years of investigation. It is a basic scientific investigation which consists of fieldwork, laboratory analysis and theoretical investigations carried out on archaeological and anthropological material. An interdisciplinary approach is used to analyse and determine the chronological continuity of the various populations, cultures and settlements which were present, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, on the Eastern Adriatic. Cultural and population exchange with neighboring areas (continental Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Middle Europe and the Mediterranean area) is also analysed. The project includes 4 specific scientific investigations: a) The analysis and definition of prehistoric cultures on the Eastern Adriatic, definition of their developmental phases, and analysis of cultural and population relationships with other cultures contiguous in time and space, b) The analysis of geographic, ethnographic, historic and other data related to the Illyrians during the periods of Greek colonization and Roman expansion, c) The analysis of material and cultural aspects of Early Christian civilisation on the Eastern Adriatic within the framework of the universal phenomenon of Early Christianity, d) Anthropological analyses of archaeological populations on the Eastern Adriatic and in continental Croatia with particular emphasis on reconstruction of subsistence strategies and the effects of microevolutionary processes.

Keywords: archaeology, anthropology, interdisciplinary approach, Croatia, chronological continuity, prehistory, classical period, early christianity, microevolution.

Research goals: Previous investigations on the Eastern Adriatic have shown the full complexity of problems present in the archaeological and anthropological analyses of the prehistoric, classical and Early Christian periods as well as the relevance of these data to the greater Mediterranean and European areas. The results of these analyses have so far not been adequately systemised and valorised. The aim of this project is to reconstruct chronological and cultural trends on the East Adriatic from prehistoric times to the Early Middle Ages. The exploration of prehistoric settlements and cultures on the East Adriatic has the aim of defining the developmental phases of these cultures and to determine and analyse potential relationships with other European cultures. The aim of investigating the classical period is to reconstruct, based on historical and archaeological data, developments in Illyricum from the time of the first contacts with the Classical World to the end of the Early Roman Imperial period. The revalorization of known, as well as determination of new Early Christian sites in Dalmatia has the final goal of developing a comprehensive catalogue of Early Christian remains. Data thus gathered and systemised will be used to analyse and determine different material and cultural aspects of Early Christianity in Roman Dalmatia. Anthropological analyses of archaeological populations have the goal of reconstructing life conditions and stresses specific to various populations as well as to determine the effects of changing ecological and cultural systems on the biological attributes of the analysed populations.
