Summary: Researching and making the corps of monuments of Istria
from 4th to 15th century, architectonic photographs about 450 churches,
documentation and photographic documentation about 2000 fragments of
sculpture, making typological and morphologycal tables considering types
and chronology. Comparative researching of materials of the
neighbouring Italian shore and Dalmatia. Synthesis materials considering
levels and species: regionalism in Istria, art connections between
neighbouring regions. Istrain contribution in developing styles in wide
context.
Research goals: The goal of the project is to bring to the highest
degree of elaboration, and to publish a material about medieval Histrian
architecture and sculpture. It means to bring to a unique system of
research a sparse, but very important heritage of the otherwise neglected
Croatian area. During the whole procedure, special attention is being paid
to representation of regional characteristics in the succession of the
styles and periods. Presentation of the influences that could be located
through the comparative studies of the resources in the neighbouring, even
more distant areas with which there have been cultural and artistic
contacts all through the period in question, are almost of the same
importance. That should be a method to build up a integrate picture of the
situation, that would give a horizontal survey, a time table, of the
monuments that have been elaborated, and, at the same time, a vertical span
of types and motifs of the artistic activity, as they are diffused through
the microareas of the narrower as well as the broader space of the region.
Expected results are: 1. Establishing of the architectural and sculptural
corpus from the 4th to the 15th century 2. publishing of the synthetic
results of the research where the material would be organized by the types
of the monuments and by the styles/periods, The accent should be put on
inadequately elaborated segments of the early Croatian and early Romanesque
heritage. 3. solution of the specific regional problems: a) influence of
the neighbouring centers as Aquileia, and Grado, Ravenna and Cividale, on
the art of Histria, and vice versa. b) roman liturgy in the Croatia and
acceptance of the pre-Romanesque style through the influence of Italy and
Carl the Great c) northern and southern spheres of influence in the period
of late middle ages 4. within the frame of Croatian artistic heritage
there is to be expected more accurate establishing of the influence of
Histria's pre-Romanesque architecture on early Croatian architecture in
Dalmatia, as well as the role of Histria in the process of diffusion of
pre-Romanesque style through the Adriatic. 5. It is also to be expected
that a rich Histrian heritage, especially late antique and early middle
ages, will help us to clear out some problems concerning Carolingian period
in northern Italy and southern Switzerland.
