Summary: Architecture of the Baroque priod represents one of the
basic chapters of the Croatian cultural heritage. During the Baroque epoch
numerous new settlements appeared, old town nuclea were enlarged and in the
country representative dwellings and residencies built. In the flourishing
period of the Counter-reformation and the renewed religiousness increased
was the number of new churches and the old ones were rebuilt. The baroque
period represents the true time of modern shaping of the Croatian
territory. Regarding the huge number of monuments and limited potentials we
dispose with for the above mentioned project Typology of the Baroque
architecture in Croatia our intention had to be restricted to the research
field of sacral architecture. Particular reason for this decision lays in a
fact that the church itself was always in the former historical periods the
eminent and the most representative task in architecture as it was bearing
all the characteristical fundamental distinctions and stylistic features.
Concerning the territory our option was the Adriatic Croatia with the final
aim to accomplish the book The Baroque churches on the Adriatic coast of
Croatia. This topic has not been up to now monographically elaborated, as
the writers and scientists considered it predominantly while surveying
other artistic phenomena. (E.g. A. Horvat, R. Matejčić, K.Prijatelj,
Baroque in Croatia, Zagreb 1982). Such surveys encompass only stylistically
characteristical monuments studied as single and not reciprocically
connected examples. For that reason our title of the project denotes that
architecture is to be examined on the basis of typological and not
stylistic features in order to enclose all and not only stylistically
characteristical sacral buildings of the Baroque period on the Adriatic
coast.

Research goals: Project goals and expected results are: 1. To
establish the data system of the 17th and 18th century churches in Croatia
on the basis of the typological features of their architecture. 2. To
examine the architectural features of the churches in question according
to their typological characteristics. 3. To scrutinize the distinctive
features of particular architectural types, defining their origins,
standards and varieties and particularly the ambiguity of the hybrid
solutions, that emerge out of various typological specimens. 4. To
elaborate the maps that survey time and space components of the
architectural types spread on the territory of Croatia embraced by this
project. 5. To examine those buildings that do not appertain to the
defined typological groupings. There are but few examples which for their
architectural complexity and high technical building demands have not
directly influenced the architectural practice in Croatia. 6. To set the
established data system on church architecture as well as their
typological divsion for the computerized data word processing. In respect
of the very restrictied financial resources, the research was conducted
mainly on the topic concerning the sacral architecture in the Northern
Adriatic Croatia. Besides the several published scientific works, the
result of the project research will be the book-atlas under the title
CHURCHES OF THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURY IN ISTRIA.
