Summary: Language contacts can be studied in three directions: a)
language acquisition; b) language borrowing; c) translation. In this
project all three directions are investigated. The process of language
borrowing is analysed on four levels: the phonological, the morphological,
the semantic and the syntactic levels. The adaptation of a model (a foreign
word) shows two kinds of changes: primary and secondary changes which take
place on all four levels. The adaptation on the quoted levels is carried
out according to the three types of transphonemization (zero, compromise
and free), three types of transmorphemization (zero, compromise and
complete) and according to the degree of the change of meaning on the
semantic level. The complete analysis is carried out in the process of
direct and indirect language borrowing on two kinds of corpus collected in
Europe or in the United States. The study of translation processes is based
on a corpus of original and translated texts, comparison of multiple
translations of one and the same text, introspection and translation
protocols. Contrastive analysis of linguistic items and psycholinguistic
processes has been undertaken. Cultural incompatibilities and compensation
mechanisms in translation are being studied.
Keywords: theory of languages in contact, contact linguistics, language acquisition, theory of translation, language contact, linguistic (language) borrowing, primary and secondary adaptation, indirect borrowing, direct borrowing, contrastive analysis, foreign word, foreign loan, loan-word
Research goals: The aim of the research in the Project is a) the
study and the analysis of language contacts of twenty European languages
with English on the basis of a new theory (Filipović 1986) and its
principles, b) to compile dictionaries of Anglicisms in the studied
languages, and c) to prove the use of the principles of the new theory on
three levels (phonological, morphological and semantic) in indirect
borrowing. In order to prove the application of these new principles on the
fourth level (syntactic) in direct borrowing the Project covers the study
of Croatian dialects in the United States. The final aim of all mentioned
investigations is a synthesis of the analysis of foreign element of the
giving language in the receiving language in two directions: in the process
of language acquisition and in the process of language borrowing. In order
to cover the third direction, the process of translation, it is decided to
examine the conditions under which the translation equivalents are found
and the strategy followed by a translator in the process of translation.
Special attention is paid to contrastive, psycho-lingistic and
sociolinguistic aspects of this process. The results of this research are
expected to contribute to the general theory of translation and practical
translating.
