Summary: On the Islands of the Bay of Quarner, which include Krk,
Cres, Lošinj, Susak, Unije, Male Srakane, Ilovik, Rab and Pag, there are
still in existence 120 settlements (villages) whose inhabitants speak
Chakavian idioms, but in the last hundred years only 12 of the local
speeches have been (more) throughly researched, representing only 12% of
the speeches actually in existence. These Chakavian speeches are of
exceptional value for the Slavic Linguistic, particularly so for the
language and the entire culture of the Croatian people. Today, these
speeches are endangered, either because of the gradual dissapearance of the
islands' population, because of the influence of the prestigious Standard
Literary Language, or because of the reciprocal influences and
interferences. This research project would encompass dialectological
listings and descriptions of each of the individual local speeches on the
Bay of Quarner Islands, on the basis of the existing literature on the
subject and on the basis of the directed field research, with the help of
the specially formulated field questionnaires. Collected linguistic
material would serve for the interpretation of these speeches, even on the
higher levels of the speech groups, sub-dialects and dialects.
Keywords: Croatistics, dialectology, Chakavian speeches, local (village) speeches
Research goals: The objective of the research is a through and
organized dialectological processing of the living speeches of the Bay of
Quarner Islands. The research is conceived in two levels: a) concrete level
of the individual local speeches, and b) abstract level of the sub-dialects
and dialects. Each of the existing 120 settlements (vilages) of the Bay of
Quarner Islands represents specific dialectological point, for which sound
recordings of the discourse of the original (native) speakers need to be
collected, phonological and phonetic(al) transcriptions made, and on the
basis of the excerpts from the existing literature created and inventory
with the description of the basic linguistic characteristics. These
individual inventories (listings) and descriptions would serve as a basis
for the composition of the synthetical papers, which would be accompanied
by the representation of the speech typologies and differential pictures,
meaning linguistic groups. The research should also produce more precise
dialectological maps. Other information about the project.
