Summary: The project intends to examine the ways in which Croatian culture - literature, theatre, literary criticism - has, in different phases, responded to the work of William Shakespeare as one of the most powerful literary canons of Western culture. Predicated on the assumption that every age as well as every national culture respond differently to cultural symbols of Shakespeare's prominence, the project focuses on culture-specific modes of appropriation (introduction, transposition and assimilation) of Shakespeare' s texts into the Croatian cultural context from the first recorded contact of Croatian culture with Shakespeare's works around the middle of the 19th century down to the present.

Keywords: William Shakespeare, Croatian literature, Croatian culture, literary canon, culture-specific response, cultural context

Research goals: Through the examination of culture-specific historical modes of response to Shakespeare in Croatian cultural contexts, the project aims at illuminating certain important aspects of Croatian culture linked to such cultural practices of inter- and transculturation: the role of national cultural and poetic heritage in the process, the bearing of dominant synchronic sociocultural concerns and tendencies on types of response, a respective attitude towards national and foriegn literary and cultural traditions, self-positioning and self-assessment within West European cultural context. The results will contain exhaustive bibliographies of Croatian Shakespeare translations and critical responses, exhaustive theatrographical lists of Shakespeare productions in Croatia, one book-length collection of essays and studies resulting from the project as well as one individual book-length contribution (Ivo Vidan: "English Intertext of Croatian Literature2). The results of this research will also prove of great value in preparing the planned publication of Shakespeare's complete works in Croatian translation.
