Summary: The individual research till now shows that the solo song,
as a small nonrepresentative form, often was the only way of professional
musical activity in Croatia. In the Croatian solo song the continuity and
participation in the international stylistic development was realized. This
project investigates the history of the Croatian solo song from the
beginnings in the monodies of Athanasius Georgicaeus ("Pisni...", 1635) to
the forst artistic culmination in the period of early romanticism in the
first half of the 19th c. (Wiesner-Livadić, Lisinski). After the period of
Ivan Zajc whose solo songs are in retardation in relation to the
international late romantic style, the solo song of the so called
"transitional" generation will be focused on (Bersa, Hatze, Pejačević) as
examples of the aesthetics of the "fin de siecle" in music. From the period
between the two world wars in the 29th c. the music of Baranović, Kunc,
Odak, Širola and Parać was selected as representative for the assimilation
of international trends and expression of the Croatian national identity in
solo song. The recent tendencies in the development of the solo song have
been researched on examples of the generation which worked mainly after the
world war II (Bjelinski, Cipra, Lhotka-Kalinski). The Croatian solo song in
each of these periods has been presented historically (the general
background, the special conditions of the national development) and
analytically on selected characteristic examples. In the analyses special
attention is given to the interaction of text and music. Thi final
monography will include the necessary scientific annexes i.e. notes,
bibliographies, music examples, index of names and summaries. A cassette
with selected music examples will be included to the book.

Research goals: The aim of this research is the survey of the
development of the Croatian solo song in the European stylistic context. In
the diacronical view the adherence to the international stylistic trend
will be focused on. The other purpose is to present analytically the chosen
musical examples and to show the characteristics of the means of musical
expression and their interaction, particularly in the relation to the
poetic text. There is also a practical aim of this research: the evidence
of the musical sources which mostly are in manuscripts (not published) and
to collect all relevant information on one place, i.e. in a monography. One
of the results should be the afirmation of the Croatian musical heritage in
musicological and cultural circles not only theoretically bit also in the
musical practice; the research should be sitmulating to the publication of
music of the solo songs and to the presentation of them in concerts in
Croatia and abroad. The results should be scientific as well as cultural:
the enriching of knowledge about the Croatian music and its afirmation. Other information about the project.
