Majority of results are in accordance with statements from Eysenck's latest version of the theory, and other sociological research.

    Authors:
    Buško, Vesna
    Kulenović, Alija (24526)
    Editors
    Jerneić, Željko
Proceedings title: Prva godišnja konferencija hrvatskih psihologa: sažeci priopćenja
    Language: hrvatski
    Place: Zagreb
    Year: 1993
    Pages: from 30 to 30
Meeting: XI. Psihologijski skup "Dani Ramira Bujasa"
    Held: from 04/15/93 to 04/17/93
Summary: The study deals with the nature and the extent of institutional differences in psychosocial climate defined by the appraisals of prison inmates. Canonical discriminant analysis brought about two significant discriminant functions which, taken together, accounted for roughly 90% of total intergroup variability of appraisal measures of psychosocial climate. Results of the study confirmed earlier views according which the establishment and the development of liberal penal institutions are directed towards better physical arrangement rather than to the improvements of rehabilitation components of institutional life.

Proceedings title: Zbornik sažetaka radova: Treća godišnja konferencija hrvatskih psihologa
    Language: hrvatski
    Place: Osijek
    Year: 1995
    Pages: from 10 to 10
Meeting: Treća godišnja konferencija hrvatskih psihologa
    Held: from 05/25/95 to 05/27/95
Summary: The study deals with the ways that prison inmates experience and cope with particular stressful situations, ordinary present during imprisonment. Canonical discriminant analysis was performed in order to assess the differences in appraisals and coping with stressful events between 7 groups of subjects formed according selected categories of stressors: accommodation, relations with other prisoners, institutional regime, relations with staff, contacts with the outside, vagueness in institution, and health. Despite the existence of statisticaly significant differences between some categories of stressful events, obtained canonical correlation values, and positions of group centroids on derived functions suggest that the content of stressful situations is not particularly strong determinant either of the choice and use of selected coping strategies, or the way that prisoners appraise certain aspects of stressful encounters.
    Keywords: prison stress, inmates, coping

Title: Personality structure and engagement in competitive rowing

Meeting: III Alps Adria Symposium of Psychology
    Held: from 06/02/93 to 06/05/93
Summary: In an attempt to test the hypothesis of sport-personality relationship, this study tried to take into consideration some limitations of previous research, especially those related to the sampling procedure. Cattell's 16PF questionnaire was administered to the sample of 68 male junior oarsmen, and to the matching group of 84 non-athletes. A linear discriminant analysis revealed significant group differences in the space of 16 personality dimensions, showing that oarsmen could be described as somewhat more reserved (factor A), less autonomous (factor (Q2), and also simpler (factor N) and less persistent (factor G) when compared to non-athletes.

    Authors:
    Zarevski, Predrag

    Ruiz-Caballero, J.A.

Proceedings title: 7th European Conference on Personality: Conference Book
    Language: engleski
    Place: Madrid, Španjolska
    Year: 1994
    ISBN/ISSN: 84-362-3046-9
    Pages: from 191 to 191
Meeting: 7th European Conference on Peronality
    Held: from 07/12/94 to 07/16/94
Summary: The study sought to examine the relations between inconsistency and psychoticism, and some other personality dimensions and self-rating scales. Inconsistency was defined as an absolute difference in self-rated shyness assessed twice with an interval of roughly 90 minutes. No significant correlations were found between inconsistency and either Eysenck's personality scales, sensation seeking scales, machiavellianism, or self-ratings on the following attributes: moody, conscientious, unpredictable, reliable and unsystematic. Marginally significant multiple determination coefficients show that inconsistency is not predictable by the described set of predictors.
Keywords: response inconsistency, shyness, personality dimensions

Title: Some socio-economic and psychological factors of criminal behavior

    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 225
Summary: The relationships between socio-economic and psychologicalfactors on the one hand, and criminal behavior on the other wereinvestigated. The research included variables of generaldemographic status, SES characteristics of subjects and membersof their families as well as indicators of social pathology.Psychological status was quantified using EPQ and MMPI-201 andcriminological status was described by a series of variablesrelated to offending and recidivism. Obtained results clearlyindicated the dominance of psychological factors as factors ofcriminal behavior.

Title: Illusory correlations effects on the process of stereotyping
Faculty: Filozofski fakultet Sveučilište u Zagrebu
    Author: SIMIĆ OGNJEN
    Date of defense: 07/10/92
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 102
Summary: In an attempt to test the hypothesis of the existence of twodifferent processes in stereotyping, the author explored theimpact of a strategy induced by instruction and the object ofperception on the creation of illusory correlations. In the sametime, the author was interested in the influence of the valenceof behavior, operationalization of the saliance and motivationalfactors. Failure of experimental demonstration of exaggeratedassotiation of salient individuals and the behavior of themajority, and also the absence of confirmation of theoreticalpredictions related to motivational factors, presents apersuasive evidence for a necessity of reexamination of thetheory of illusory correlations.

Title: Interactionist approach to the analysis of offenders' behavior and adjustment in institutional settings
Faculty: Filozofski fakultet Sveučilište u Zagrebu
    Author: BUŠKO VESNA
    Date of defense: 05/19/95
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 109
Summary: The study was conceived as an attempt at application of Lazarus' transactional theory of stress and coping on the analyses of offenders' adjustment and experience of imprisonment. Deprivations of the contacts with the outside and, to the lesser extent, accommodation and health proved to be the most serious sources of prison stress. The evidence was found that direct actions and reinterpretations represent the most frequent ways of coping in prisoners, with low level of differentiation with regard to the type of stressor. The strongest predictor of the overall adjustment measure showed to be institutional security level and, to the lesser extent, stress intensity and some criminological and demografic features. The study gave the evidence on the importance of mediating cognitive appraisal and coping processes in the prediction of anxiety, depression and psychosomatic problems, as well as on moderator effects of appraised event controllability.
Keywords: offenders, prison environment, stress and coping theory, adjustment
