Summary: Criminality is one of the greatest problems of contemporary society, and in the same time one of the greatest unknowns in behavioral sciences. Main purpose of this project is the advancement of knowledge on factors which determine appearance and persistency of criminal behavior and effects of various treatments applied to incarcerates and risk groups. Work on project comprises methodological and fundamental problems. In the domain of methodology the intention is to improve diagnostic processes related to criminal behavior and its potential determinants. The central inquiry in the research area on criminal behavior relates to the relationships between individual or psychological, socioeconomic and demographic characteristics on the one hand, and criminality on the other. The scope of activities also includes research on those general psychological problems which can precipitate explication of criminal behavior. Investigations have theoretical as well as empirical character and are mainly conceived as quasi-experimental multivariate procedures. It is expected that the obtained results will provide better diagnostics of criminologically relevant characteristics, improve planning and realization of treatment, make the execution of criminal sanction more efficient and provide new informations which could underlie more efficient ways of prevention.

Keywords: crime, criminal behavior, recidivism, personality, psychosocial climate, stress

Research goals: The main purpose of the project is the improvement of comprehension on determinants of criminal behavior and the effects of various treatments applied to convicts and persons prone to crime. This aim will be accomplished by work on two topics: the first includes examination and establishing the relationships between factors which theoretically belong to the domain of causal elements or correlates of criminal behavior on the one hand, and deviant, criminal and behavior during treatment on the other hand. The second main topic relates to the construction and/or adaptation of psychological instruments for the assessment of criminologically relevant characteristics, as well as criminological and penological features. It is expected that the realisation of these aims, in addition to basic insights, can provide informations which will enable better diagnosis of criminologically relevant characteristics, improve planning and conducting the treatment (especially its individualisation), advance the execution of criminal sanctions and provide additional basis for undertaking more efficient strategies of crime prevention.
