Summary: Croatia devotes considerable attention to Croatian žmigrOs
and workers temporarily employed abroad. The most frequent activity is
helping children of the diaspora learn Croatian, educational stipends, and
maintaining cultural ties to the "homeland". Until now, there has been no
study of the quality of life of Croatian families living abroad. This
research is intended to be conducted on a sampling of 1500 Croatians from
abroad and migrant workers, during their respective visits to Croatia, and
in three European countries.
Keywords: Quality of Life, migration, quality of life indicators, national and cultural identity
Research goals: The quality of life is a general indication both of
the development of a modern society and the degree to which primary needs
of a given community are satisfied. Quality of life indicators show
economic and social development as the degree to which primary needs are
met and in which ways. A country with as many žmigržs as Croatia must give
special attention to monitoring and improving the quality of life of
citizens living abroad. The objective of this research is two-fold: to
investigate the quality of life of Croatian žmigržs and the quality of life
of migrant workers, in comparison to citizens residing in Croatia.
Indicators of the quality of life, especially cultural aspects, of
Croatians in the diaspora and of migrant workers will provide relevant data
about their lifestyles and satisfaction. These indicators will be the
basis for connecting Croatian educational and cultural institutions with
Croatians in the diaspora. This will also help adapt programs and address
the needs of this population with the goal of improving their quality of
life. Other information about the project.
