Summary: The investigation of the acquisition of any particular
language is important because of scientific, cultural and practical
reasons. Our research is motivated by both scientific reasons
(description of psycholinguistic processes in acquisition), and
practical reasons (diagnosis and therapy of disorders as well as
stimulation of the development). There were hardly any systematic studies
of that kind in Croatian. Design includes a combination of ideographic
and nomothetic approach. Language development is followed up
longitudinally. Four children are recorded 2 to 4 times monthly and their
speech is transcribed by means of CHILDES system. The sample of children
is homogeneous in terms of family background, parents education and
language environment. The variables are: accustical features of
vocals, accustical features of consonants, (the special emphasis is on a
development of canonnical syllabes), suprasegmental features of child
language, pre- and protomorphology, vocabulary, semantical
overextensions, MLU and grammatical complexity of utterances. A
communication inventory is applied within the nomothetic approach to
study language development. The questions are answered by parents till
the age of 36 months. This part of the Project should provide insights
to acquisition of vocabulary and early language forms.
Keywords: acquisition of the Croatian language, developmental psycholinguistics, mean length of utterance - MLU, semantic overextensions, acoustic analysis, phonological development, metaphonology, premorphology, protomorphology, vocabulary development,
Research goals: 1. description of accoustic properties of
children's vocalizations from birth to first phonems production and
suprasegmental features of speech 2. analysis of the acquistion of
grammatical structures and lexic in Croatian 3. crosslinguistic
comparisons of pre- and protomorphology 4. definition of gestures that
precede linguistic utterances 5. development of language norms for the
Croatian language for children up to 36 months of age. 6. development
of methods for language assesment and of diagnostic procedures in early
language acquisition in Croatian
