Summary: The general geochemical map by definition is a map of
surface and near surface distribution map of chemical elements of a
certain area, country or region. In the course of geochemical mapping for
the purposes of the creation of the General geochemical map of Croatia,
420 samples of soil on a regular grid 5x5 km (in some places 1x1 km) were
collected in the area of Istria, Gorski Kotar Hrvatsko primorje, The
Kvarner islands, the Sinjsko polje area and the island of Mljet. In total
40 geochemical variables were investigated inkluding some radionuclides,
but only 15 elements and 5 radionuclides are mutual for all investigated
areas. An objective view of geochemical distribution of elements was
performed in considering the diferences in geological and lithological
basement of soils, soil type, type of environment, natural and
anthropogenic influences on the environment in order to give an
comprehensive insight to the possible sources of input of various chemical
elements from various types of pollution. In order to critically evaluate
and investigate the natural bacground values of element distribution in
carbonatic environments as for example in the Sinjsko polje region modern
statistical methods were utilised. As a conclusive result of The project
General geochemical map of Croatia are geochemical maps of the
investigated areas in the 1:500000 scale. Investigated noncarbonate
terrains include the Slavonian mountain region, Mt. Medvednica and
Hrvatsko zagorje where 1500 samples were collected on the total area of
some 1100 square km. The results of analysis of these samples are in the
final stage of elaboration. A part of this project is elaborated with the
Forestary faculty in Zagreb in areas of national parks of Croatia.
Research goals: Geochemical data bases contain information relevant
for economic desisions and environmental issues, exploration of mineral
deposits, their exploitation and dressing, turism and rekreation,
agriculture, forestery and many aspescts of human and animal health, waste
diposal and urban planing. All these areas of human activity are becoming
of prime importance for local communities and government administration.
The problems of environment futhermore do not respect political borders
and data from one part of the world can be of crucial interest for some
other regions in the world. In this context geochemical investigations
are important in Croatian kartic regions for which Croatia is locus
tipikus and as such recognised umong sciencists dealing with geochemistry
of carbonate terrains. As a result of natural and chemical processes in
the environment and human activities the content of chemical elements can
vary several orders of magnitude. These variations are ussualy
unsatisfacturally documented and are not respected enough when development
plans are made. The gaphical and surface presentation of element contents
is presented on a geochemical map and the goal of these investigatios is
the making of a General geochemical map of Croatia which would be the
basis for all development plans.
