Summary: The purpose of this investigation was to test the
effects of the application of different programs for stimulation of social
behaviour in children with mental retardation, who show undesired ways of
behaviour. After the preliminary investigation in which metric
characteristics of the diagnostic instruments were estimated, sample of 66
children with delayed cognitive development was chosen.These children
exhibited some undesired ways of behaviour as well.Children were aged from
7 to 11 years and were attending regular and special primary schools. All
the children live in own families.Initially the level of their social
behaviour was estimated.Sample was divided into five subsamples. On the
four experimental groups four different rehabilitation programs were
applicated, while the fifth group was included in the process of classic
instructions on the topics of the regular school subjects, at the same
time. During the one year experimental period changes in variables of
school learning as well as in variables of social behaviour were evaluated
as well.Final investigation estimated levels of achievement in the each of
five groups and the effects of various programs were compared as well.
In order to meet the aims of this investigation some variables were traced
on the sample of parents and teachers, of pupils.

Research goals: Basic aim of this investigation was to test the
effects of the application of various programs for the stimulation of
social behaviour in children with mental retardation, who show undesired
ways of behaviour. For this purpose changes in the incidence and the
structure of undesired ways of behaviour, changes in the learning ability,
changes in the general social behaviour of children , as well as changes in
their parents attitudes were analyzed as well. In the attempts to
eliminate undesired ways of behaviour in persons with mental retardation
there are present different attempts to applicate procedures such as
psychotherapy, behaviourial modification, drug therapy and acquiring social
skills. But any procedure has to be modified according to the developmental
abilities of persons with mental retardation, before it's application.
Parents usually develop unrealistic attitudes in the parent-child
relationship (Teodorović,Levadovski,1986),which complicates successful
child's rehabilitation. Therefore the need to include parents in various
ways of psychotherapeutic and cancelling work were emphasized. Therefore
the subjects of this investigation are children with mental retardation,
who live in their own families. According to their needs different
models of treatment are developed and applicated in order to diminish and
eliminate undesired ways of behaviour. These programs will represent
supplement to existing programs in the system of education and
rehabilitation of children with mental retardation, which were not
sufficiently effective in the socialisation of children with retardation.
Since they are aimed toward eliminating undesired ways of behaviour
applicated programs will enable raising the general level of social
behaviour in children with mental retardation, which will free their
potential for the social development and the school learning,and at the
end it will result with better functional organisation of the family which
has retarded child.
